AMICAE HISTORY

Amicae (Friends of Zeta)

As early as 1940, graduate chapters of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. had begun to realize the importance of the prestige, good will, and cooperation of women who for various reasons were not members of any Greek-lettered organization. In 1948, with the recommendation of the Grand President, Lullelia Harrison, Zeta graduate chapters were allowed to organize auxiliaries that would be known as Zeta Amicae. These groups render valuable services to the sorority and their respective communities. These groups are located in areas where there are active graduate chapters of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.

The auxiliary of Alpha Delta Zeta Chapter is an auxiliary of dynamic women whose purpose it is to lend assistance to their Zeta friends and their community by supporting Zeta activities and working within the communities to provide assistance from members of their own auxiliary. Under the wisdom and guidance of Amica Alyne Payton and Amica Blonda Mack in 2006 the auxiliary inducted two new members who would be a part of an increase in membership for the auxiliary. Those two new members were Amica Bernice Grant and Amica Jewelene Mays in October 2006. These two young ladies assisted their new Zeta Friends with the the Z-Hope Project for International Women of Color , Alpha Delta Zeta Chapter, along with other chapters within the State of Mississippi, by donating items to the Z-HOPE International Project: 3 P’s (Panties, Pencils and Pens) for Africa. They donated white cotton panties, pencils and pens (ink) for Ghana. The trip to Ghana, West Africa was scheduled for November 10-19, 2006.

The next following Fall season 2007, these members inducted five new members, Amica Carlotta Bacon, Amica Maria McCllelan, Amica Cantina Cornelius, Amica Charlette Hunter and Amica Candance Hunter (The first mother-daughter induction within this auxiliary.) These young ladies came forth into the community and really made a difference by participating in the Donation of Cleaning and Kitchen Supplies to the Ronald McDonald House at UMC Campus, Presentation of Resurrection Sunday Bags to members of the Youth Auxiliary at their monthly meeting and also served refreshments, Provided personal items to residents at the Comphill Nursing Home, Donated Hygiene Supplies Basket to Battered Women’s Shelter–Angel Wings Outreach at the Mendenhall Amicae Retreat and the Belk’s Charity Fundraiser. They held two bonding activities with their Zeta Friends, A Cheese-Cake & Coffee Social and an Amicae-Zeta Friendship Breakfast.

In Fall 2007, the auxiliary was blessed to add five more new members who were already very active in their various communities. The new members were Amica Ann Tanner, Amica Dorothy Cook , Amica Gloria Thompson, Amicae Jennifer Dobson and Amicae Jessica Dobbins ( The first sister induction in the history of the auxiliary ).

These ladies began the new year with a community service project at the Community Stewpot Kitchen. They assisted with the serving and preparation of meals for the residents at the shelter. Amicae Bernice Grant spearheaded this project and even solicited the help of her own family members to be a blessing in the lives of those less fortunate than us.

During the 33 rd Annual State Conference held in Jackson, MS February 28 th-March 1, 2008 the Alpha Delta Zeta Amicae Auxiliary received the honor of having their president, Amica Blonda Mack, named Amicae of The Year. Amica Mack was also elected as the State Assistant Secretary for the Amicae Auxiliary. This was quite an honor for the auxiliary and their Zeta Friends of Alpha Delta Zeta Chapter.

In Fall 2008, the auxiliary was blessed to add three additional new members. The new members were Amica Twyla Russell, Amica Evandia Woods and Amica Sheila Guy.

The auxiliary is advised by Friend Francine Brookins and Co-Advisor Friend Jeraldine Watts.

Invitation to membership in the Alpha Delta Zeta Chapter Amicae Auxiliary is based upon the applicant’s interest in Zeta Amicae, their service in the community and a good moral character and reputation.
